Publications - designing

What I know about cruising has been learned almost exclusively from two sources; good books, and a tremendous number of mistakes. Of these two possibilities, I can heartily recommend learning from books, especially if it means avoiding some of the mistakes.

Catalogue “Piccole grandi barche da costruire e da amare – progettisti italiani”
B.C.A. Publisher (€ 8,00)
(Great Small Boats to Build and Love – Italian Designers)

We have collected in this catalogue all the plans by Italian designers that we propose to amateur boat-builders: over 50 boats, from 2,20 to 11 meters (7.2 to 36 feet), rowing, sailing, or motor boats of the most various kind, from the small centre-board boat to the cabin cruiser. Most of them are novelties and were not included in our previous catalogue. Every boat is presented together with a technical report with drawings, pictures and the author’s remarks; the catalogue also contains a wealth of general information for amateur builders.

Catalogue “Piccole grandi barche da costruire e da amare – progettisti stranieri”
B.C.A. Publisher (€ 8,00)
(Great Small Boats to Build and Love – British and American Designers)

The catalogue contains all the British and American plans that we have proposed to amateur boat-builders since the beginning of our activity, plus the ones that we have included over the years and a number of recent “new entries”, adding up to nearly 70 plans by foreign designers. These architects’ names are well-known in the sector, and many hundreds boats they designed for amateur builders sail happily at sea: many of them, thanks to our efforts, even in our seas.

Paolo Lodigiani: “Un introduzione al capire e progettare le barche”
B.C.A. Publisher (€ 28,00)
(An Introduction to Understanding and Designing Boats)

Why do boats sometimes behave in seemingly unpredictable or erratic manners? What discriminates a “good boat” from an ordinary one? What are the mechanisms that lie beneath its stability, its safety, its seawortiness, its performances? In something more than 300 pages full of concepts, but never lacking in generalities and digressions, the author helps to find the answer to these and many other questions, through examples and illustrations, and initiates the reader into the fascinating and many-sided world of yacht design.

Preface

Paolo Lodigiani: “Il multiscafo da crociera”
B.C.A. Publisher (€ 12,00)
(The Cruising Multihull)

These notes are used as a backing to our design courses. They analyse specific design and construction problems related to small and medium-sized cruising multihulls (from 21 to 36 feet), clarifying them with many examples and references to existing trimarans and catamarans. Structural and building aspects of these kinds of boats are also taken into exam.

Paolo Lodigiani: “La barca da viaggio”
B.C.A. Publisher (€ 12,00)
(The Blue Water Yacht)

These 112-pages notes analyse thoroughly and rather exhaustively the designing and building problems of a 33-36 feet boat suitable for long distance cruises.

Paolo Lodigiani – Filippo BICH: “L´uso del computer nella progettazione nautica” B.C.A. Publisher (€ 13,00)
(Computer Aided Yacht Design)

More than 100 pages of notes explain the extraordinary potential of computer in boat-building and introduce beginners and experts to the tricks of hi-tech design.
